The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, remembers the life of the Revd John Stott, and has delivered the following tribute in response to news of his death last night.

'The death of John Stott will be mourned by countless Christians throughout the world.  During a long life of unsparing service and witness, John won a unique place in the hearts of all who encountered him, whether in person or through his many books.   He was a man of rare graciousness and deep personal kindness, a superb communicator and a sensitive and skilled counsellor.  Without ever compromising his firm evangelical faith, he showed himself willing to challenge some of the ways in which that faith had become conventional or inward-looking.  It is not too much to say that he helped to change the face of evangelicalism internationally, arguing for the necessity of ‘holistic’ mission that applied the Gospel of Jesus to every area of life, including social and political questions.  But he will be remembered most warmly as an expositor of scripture and a teacher of the faith, whose depth and simplicity brought doctrine alive in all sorts of new ways.

We give thanks to God for his life and for all that was given to us through his ministry.'

전 세계의 수많은 그리스도인들이 존 스토트 신부의 죽음을 슬퍼할 것입니다. 아낌없는 봉사와 증언을 실천한 일생 동안, 존은 그의 인격과 많은 책을 통해 그를 만난 모든 이들의 마음 속에서 독특한 자리를 차지했습니다.
그는 보기 드문 자애로움과 깊은 인격적 친절함을 지닌 사람이었으며, 뛰어난 소통자였고, 민감하고 숙련된 상담가였습니다. 굳건한 복음적 신앙을 타협하지 않으면서도, 관습적이고 내면지향적인 신앙에 대해 도전하려 했습니다.
그가 사회적, 정치적 질문을 포함하여 삶의 모든 영역에 예수의 복음을 적용하는 ‘통전적’ 선교의 필요를 주장함으로써 전세계 복음주의의 얼굴을 바꾸도록 도왔다고 말하는 것은 지나친 말이 아닙니다.
우리는 그를 성서 해설자이자 신앙의 교사로서 마음 깊이 기억할 것입니다. 그는 온갖 새로운 방법으로 교리에 깊이와 단순성을 부여하여 살아 숨쉬는 교리로 만들었습니다.
우리는 그의 삶 그리고 그의 사목을 통해 우리에게 주신 모든 것들로 인해 하느님께 감사를 드립니다.

On the news of the death of the Revd Dr John Stott, Rector Emeritus of All Souls Church, Langham Place, London, we wish to pay tribute to him, and to acknowledge his great contribution over many years to the life of the Anglican Communion – indeed the whole Church – across the world.
Dr Stott spoke in Ireland on a number of occasions, particularly through his work with Langham Partnership International. His talks, his witness in ordained ministry for over sixty years, and, perhaps most significantly, his numerous publications were highly influential to the formation of many clergy and made a notable and valued impact on the lives and faith of lay people alike. Gracious to all who knew him, his loss will be felt widely while his writings will remain a fitting legacy to his life of Christian service.

그는 그를 아는 모든 사람에게 자애로웠습니다. 그의 빈 자리가 크게 느껴지겠지만, 그의 저술들은 그리스도인의 봉사를 실천했던 그의 삶에 대한 온당한 전설로 남을 것입니다.
